How the gold price in Rwanda is worked out
There is no separate Rwandan gold exchange. The local price follows the world price, converted into francs. Four steps turn the international quote into the RWF per gram figure above:
- Spot price: the international price of one troy ounce of pure gold in US dollars.
- Per gram: one troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so the ounce price is divided by 31.1035.
- In RWF: the per gram dollar price is multiplied by the current USD to RWF exchange rate.
- By karat: the pure gold price is multiplied by the purity of each karat.
| Karat | Fineness stamp | Gold content | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24k | 999 | 99.9% | Bars, coins, some jewellery |
| 22k | 916 | 91.67% | Traditional and Indian style jewellery, sovereigns, Krugerrands |
| 21k | 875 | 87.5% | Jewellery in Gulf styles |
| 18k | 750 | 75% | Fine jewellery, rings set with stones |
| 14k | 585 | 58.5% | Everyday jewellery |
| 10k | 417 | 41.7% | Budget jewellery |
As of 5 October 2026, the live feed put 24k gold at about RWF 196,600 per gram. That figure is indicative and moves daily, so use the calculator rather than an old number.
Where the spot price comes from
The "spot price" is the price for gold delivered now, as opposed to at a future date. It is set by constant trading between banks, refiners and dealers, mainly in London, New York and Shanghai, and it moves every few seconds while markets are open.
London also publishes a benchmark called the LBMA Gold Price. It is set by an electronic auction twice a day, at 10:30 and 15:00 London time, in US dollars, and is run by an independent administrator, ICE Benchmark Administration. Participants submit buy and sell orders, and the price is adjusted round by round until supply and demand balance. Many contracts around the world refer to this benchmark, which is why it matters even to a seller in Kigali.
Our calculator uses a live spot feed rather than the twice daily benchmark, so it reflects the market closer to the moment you look.
What moves the gold price
Gold has no single driver. Several forces push and pull on it at the same time.
Interest rates
Gold pays no interest. When interest rates, especially real rates after inflation, are high, holding gold costs more in lost income, and demand tends to soften. When major central banks such as the US Federal Reserve are expected to cut rates, gold usually becomes more attractive.
The US dollar
Because gold is quoted in dollars, a weaker dollar makes gold cheaper for buyers using other currencies, which tends to support the price. A stronger dollar tends to do the opposite.
Central bank buying
Central banks hold gold as part of their reserves. They bought more than 1,000 tonnes a year in 2022, 2023 and 2024, more than double the average of the years before, and analysts expected continued large purchases in 2026. This steady official demand has been one of the main reasons for the high prices of recent years.
Uncertainty and inflation
Wars, political tension and fears about inflation or currency weakness tend to push people toward gold as a store of value. Prices can jump quickly on news and fall back when calm returns.
Jewellery demand
Jewellery is one of the largest uses of gold, but it reacts to price. The World Gold Council reported that global jewellery demand fell 23% year on year to 300 tonnes in the first quarter of 2026, as record prices pushed buyers away from jewellery and toward bars and coins. High prices discourage buying new jewellery, but they also make it a good moment to sell old pieces you no longer wear.
Why the RWF price can move when the world price does not
A seller in Rwanda faces two prices at once: the dollar price of gold and the dollar price of the franc. If the franc weakens against the dollar, gold priced in RWF goes up, even on a day when the world gold price is flat. If the franc strengthens, the RWF price falls a little.
That is why we convert at the current exchange rate rather than a fixed one. When you compare an offer from a jeweller in Nyarugenge with the calculator, make sure you are both looking at the same day's figures.
Price per gram versus what you will be offered
The calculator gives the melt value: the value of the pure gold in your item at today's spot price. No buyer will pay the full melt value, because they have costs:
- Testing: an XRF machine or acid kit, and the time to use it.
- Refining: most scrap and old jewellery has to be melted and refined before the gold can be sold on, which costs money and loses a little metal.
- Price risk: the gold price can fall between the day a buyer pays you and the day they sell the gold on.
- Margin: the buyer's profit.
Worked example
Say you have a broken 18k chain weighing 10 grams.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Pure gold content | 10 g x 0.75 | 7.5 g |
| Melt value | 7.5 g x RWF 196,600 | about RWF 1,474,500 |
| Example offer at 85% of melt | RWF 1,474,500 x 0.85 | about RWF 1,253,300 |
The 85% figure is only an illustration, not a market rate. Real offers depend on the buyer, the type of item and how easy it is to verify. The point of the calculation is to know your melt value so you can see what percentage each buyer is really offering. Our gold karat guide explains how purity is tested and how to read the stamps on your pieces.
Gold coin and bar values at today's price
Bullion coins are the easiest gold to value, because their gold content is fixed and published. Here is what the gold inside some common coins was worth at the indicative 24k price of RWF 196,600 per gram on 5 October 2026:
| Coin or bar | Purity | Pure gold content | Melt value (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| British sovereign | 22k | 7.32 g | RWF 1,439,100 |
| Krugerrand (1 oz) | 22k | 31.1 g (1 troy ounce) | RWF 6,115,000 |
| Maple Leaf (1 oz) | 99.99% | 31.1 g (1 troy ounce) | RWF 6,115,000 |
| 10 g bar | 999 | 10 g | RWF 1,966,000 |
A Krugerrand weighs 33.93 g in total, because it is alloyed with copper to make it harder, but it still contains a full troy ounce of gold. So do not multiply its total weight by the 24k price. Coins and bars in good condition, with their capsule or assay card, are quick to verify, which usually helps the offer.
Tips for using today's price when you sell
- Weigh in grams: a kitchen scale is a rough guide, but the buyer's scale should be calibrated and in clear view.
- Check the stamp: 750, 916 or 18k tells you the claimed purity. Testing confirms it.
- Check the price on the day: gold can move several percent in a week. An offer that was fair last month may not be fair today.
- Separate stones: diamonds and gemstones are valued differently from the metal, and their weight should not be counted as gold.
- Ask for the breakdown: weight, purity, price per gram and percentage offered. A fair buyer will show it.
- Compare offers: for anything valuable, get more than one quote.

What this page does not cover
This price is for refined gold in finished form: jewellery, coins, bars and scrap. Raw or unrefined gold from mining is a different market. In Rwanda, mineral trade is regulated by the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB), and anyone trading minerals needs an RMB licence. We do not handle mined gold in any form.

Frequently asked questions
How is the gold price in Rwanda calculated?
We take the international spot price of gold in US dollars per troy ounce, divide by 31.1035 to get the price per gram, convert to Rwandan francs at the current exchange rate, then multiply by the purity of each karat. The result is the value of the gold content only.
Why will a buyer offer less than this price?
The figure shown is the value of the pure gold content at spot. A buyer has to test the item, cover refining and handling costs, carry price risk until the gold is sold on, and earn a margin. Offers are therefore below this value, and the gap differs between buyers, which is why comparing offers matters.
How often is the price updated?
The calculator refreshes about every hour from public market data for the gold spot price and the US dollar to Rwandan franc exchange rate. Gold trades almost around the clock on weekdays, so the price can move between refreshes, especially around major economic news.
What was the price of 24k gold in Rwanda in October 2026?
As of 5 October 2026, our live feed put 24k gold at roughly RWF 196,600 per gram. This is indicative only and changes every day with the spot price and the exchange rate, so always check the live calculator on the day you plan to sell.
Does the Rwandan franc exchange rate affect the gold price?
Yes. Gold is priced internationally in US dollars, so when the franc weakens against the dollar, the RWF price of gold rises even if the dollar price is unchanged. When the franc strengthens, the RWF price falls. Both moves feed straight into the calculator.
Is the price the same for jewellery, coins and scrap?
The gold content is valued the same way for all of them: weight times purity times the price per gram. What differs is the offer. Clean bars and well known coins are easy to verify, while mixed scrap or jewellery set with stones takes more testing, which can lower the offer.
Can I sell raw gold from a mine at this price?
No. This page is for jewellery, coins, bars and scrap. Raw or unrefined mined gold is outside our scope and must go through mineral traders licensed by the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board.
